From Fluent City:

Translating literature requires more than the ability to translate between two languages. While maintaining a poet or author’s basic literal meanings, translators must make sacrifices and decisions to make a faithful translation that also takes into account humor, brevity, and tone in the new target language. Join Fluent City and WORD Bookstore for a lively panel on the art of translating literature and learn what it truly takes to make a book or poem universal in several different languages.

Panelists:

Author Lila Zemborain, an Argentine poet who is the author of several poetry collections including Guardianes del Secreto, translated into the English book Guardians of the Secret and Malvas Orquideas del Mar, translated into the English book Mauve Sea-Orchids. Her other work, translated by Rosa Alcala and Monica de la Torre, has appeared in the anthologies The Light of City and Sea: An Anthology of Suffolk County Poetry, Corresponding Voices, in the art catalogues Alessandro Twombly, Heidi McFall, and in publications such as Ecopoetics, Rattapallax, The Brooklyn Rail, A Gathering of the Tribes, The Poetry Project Newsletter and Mandorla. Zemborain is the director and editor of the Rebel Road Series and the curator of the KJCC Poetry Series at NYU. A John Simon Guggenheim fellow (2007), she is a Clinical Assistant Professor in Creative Writing in Spanish at NYU.

Jordan Lee Schnee will moderate the panel. Jordan is a poet and translator living in Brooklyn, NY. His poems have appeared in The Red Wheelbarrow, Lumina and in Chautauqua, where he received a “New Voice” distinction in 2010. Some Dollars, a book of translations of the author Washington Cucurto, was published by Eloisa Cartonera in 2012 in Buenos Aires. Jordan studies linguistics and translation at NYU and is a teacher of French, Spanish, and German at Fluent City.
