Training Ship Esmeralda Prison
by Raúl ZuritaAnd the sea boiling with bodies
sunk into the dead night
And the country of planks crossed into the dead night of the sea
and they looked like the remains of a gashed-open boat the barracks
of the Andes like prows slashing the white breakers
And then we saw the training ship Esmeralda
Ruined sails down like a thick plank beached in the
middle of the passage through the sea
And they were like dry waves the waves of death sweeping
those crooked planks
There where the ships’ frames are silhouetted on the shore and
next to them the thick wood from the destroyed ports whitened
from salt outlined against the dead stick pile of the night
And death looked like a keel drilling the plank-sea
of the night
And the hoarse waters opened and the sky sharply
narrowed down like a prow
And the entire universe whistled into the abyss of the sea
descending between the dead
When the sky sunk into the broken heart of the sea and then gluing us
one piece to another like infected wounds embracing each other we
saw the planks where they murdered us and we sang and we sang together

as only the dead night can sing illuminated for a second by the living sky
