For our next event, the acclaimed academic and translator Susan Bernofsky will guide us into the world of the other Berlin Stories – that of Robert Walser.

Having moved from his native Switzerland to Berlin in 1905 at the age of 27, Robert Walser’s dreams mirror many literary hopefuls in the city today. Wanting to develop his talent as a fledgling author in the burgeoning metropolis, Walser found himself increasingly distanced from high society. After seven years and several failed attempts at finding critical success in a city that always remained close to his heart, Walser left Berlin in 1912, never to return.

Despite his outsider status and lack of popular success at the time, Walser’s dispatches from the city demonstrate his inherent understanding of Berlin at the time. Collected by NYRB under the title “Berlin Stories”, they are a startling combination of vivid lyrical description, gleaned from his numerous walks in and around a Berlin as equally iconic as Isherwood’s.
