I worship fire
But recant when lightning finds me out

Four poems by Ghalib translated by M. Shahid Alam.

In crossing limits we become free.

In dying we live dangerously.

Why singe my heart all day?

At once, pitch your bolt at me.

I surf the sea of extinction. Saqi –

Your slights cannot sink me.

In every drop the cry – I am the sea.

He is for me: great is my glory.

Ghalib, she takes my breath away.

What a face, what eyes, what sorcery!
